A Brief Introduction to Anger
Anger is something we all experience. It can show up as irritation, frustration, resentment or rage. But many of us were never taught how to understand anger or express it in healthy ways. As a result, we may struggle with the anger of others, particularly when it appears as aggression, or feel ashamed of our own. Often, we simply don’t know how to understand or manage anger. As a consequence, most of us respond to common anger triggers (such as injustice, breached boundaries, responsibility overload, power imbalances) by becoming reactive, defensive, withdrawn or emotionally numb.
But anger is not simply “bad” or destructive. Beneath anger there may be hurt, fear, grief, stress or unmet needs. When listened to and expressed constructively, anger can become a source of insight, energy, protection and positive change. This workshop will give you guidance to help you achieve that shift.
What the Workshop Offers
The workshop offers you a safe and supportive space to experientially explore an emotion that is often avoided or misunderstood. Rather than seeing anger as “good” or “bad”, you will be guided through a series of activities and exercises, including embodied and creative practices, reflection and discussion to look at the messages it contains and how we can respond to it more consciously and constructively. Supported by theory and psychoeducation, you’ll gain a new and more nuanced understanding of your own anger and that of others.
Together we will explore:
how anger affects the body and mind
common patterns such as suppressing, avoiding or exploding with anger
the purpose and meaning of anger
the connection between anger, stress, boundaries and communication
what may lie beneath anger, including sadness, fear and vulnerability
how to ‘hear’ the messages that underlie anger
healthy ways to express emotions safely and constructively
how greater awareness can improve relationships and self-understanding
We won’t just be talking about anger intellectually, you will be invited to explore your own lived experiences and develop a more conscious and compassionate relationship with this powerful emotion.
Participation is always by choice, and no previous experience is needed. You will be guided and supported through the day’s activities by the workshop facilitators, experienced outdoor therapists, Lucinda Weis and Mary Gordon-Cumming.
How we’ll work
The day will include a blend of experiential and reflective practices, including:

A note about the workshop
This workshop is not about encouraging aggression or confrontation. It is about learning how to listen to anger, understand its messages and respond with greater awareness, responsibility and care.
This workshop is not therapy but will be therapeutic and is facilitated by two therapists with experience of working experientially outdoors and with groups.
The cost of the day (9.30 – 4.30 with refreshments) is £90 per person or an early bird price of £75 if booked before 1st June.

FAQs
-
The workshop will take place at Wild & Green in Crowborough, a woodland setting that provides immersion in nature but with the benefits of a shelter in the case of poor weather and access to an indoor loo. The campfire acts as the hearth and heart for us to return to as we work individually, in small groups and with the full group throughout our day together. Need to say something about the fire and liability
-
Physical and emotional safety are essential factors in being able to work with anger. As outdoor therapists, we have chosen to run this workshop outdoors because of the natural environment’s capacity to support our full presence, grounding and regulation. At the same time, we recognise that for some participants, being in nature may come with more difficult emotions, including anxiety, perhaps even anger. We will invite space for identifying, naming and working with these emotions throughout the workshop.
-
The workshop is being held in a woodland setting. So please bring sturdy footwear and wind, sun, rain protection. Please wear comfortable clothing and bring anything you need to feel at ease.
We will provide a simple lunch of a vegetarian soup with bread and cake. Hot drinks will be available throughout the day. The booking form asks for information about any dietary requirements you may have.
Apart from that please bring openness, curiosity and a willingness to engage with your own experiences around anger – both your own and others.

The workshop is being held in a woodland setting which has uneven and untreated surfaces. However, we are committed to making it as accessible as possible. Please contact us directly to discuss how we can support you to attend.
